What Caught My 👀 This Week
The value of the US share market is 2.1 times the size of its economy.
For context, at the peak of the tech boom in 2000, the market traded at 1.7 times GDP. In 2007 (just before the GFC), it sat around 1.1 times.

Tinder Parent Match Group Added To The S&P500
The share price of Tinder parent, Match Group rose more than 8% on Tuesday following confirmation that the company will be joining the S&P 500. Match Group will take their place in the S&P 500 on September 20th by replacing pharmaceutical company, Perrigo. Other than Tinder, Match Group own several other online dating platforms including Match.com, Hinge, OKCupid.
Reading about Match Group's inclusion into the S&P 500 led me down the online dating rabbit hole. As it turns out, online dating is a rapidly growing market! According to Statista, the online dating segment is forecast to grow at 8.44% per year between 2021 - 2025.
This article from the business of apps provides an interesting overview of the online dating market for those of you keen on doing some further reading.
Theranos Founder Elizabeth Holmes Begins Trial
Elizabeth Holmes, founder of the former unicorn start-up, Theranos is set to begin her trial for defrauding investors about the blood testing device her former company was built around.
Holmes believed that the process of drawing blood through a needle could be done with less pain and less blood, so she started Theranos.
Although never successfully proving the company's 'Edison' device could actually test for a number of blood conditions using a small amount of blood, Holmes managed to persuade prominent individuals to fund Theranos until they had their eureka moment.
Media Titan, Rupert Murdoch and former U.S. Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger and George Schulz are a few of many high-profile names to invest enormous amounts of capital into the unproven start-up.
Holmes is due to go to trial this week and could face up to 20 years imprisonment if she's found guilty.
The Theranos story illustrates the ugly side of 'fake it till you make it' ethos that lines the halls of hundreds of successful tech start-ups. It seems Theranos proved that you can only take the concept so far.
This podcast from ABC divulges the latest chapter in the story of Elizabeth Holmes. John Carreyrous book, Bad Blood also provides some juicy insights into the rise and fall of Theranos.
I read this in January 2021 and could not put it down.
